Executing Winning Strategies in Healthcare

As an accomplished and influential senior executive with two decades of managed care experience, Kelly Munson focuses on providing health care to those who need it most.

As senior vice president at WellCare Health Plans, Inc., she has responsibility for operations and Medicaid product development for about four million members, as well as oversight of its community advocacy programs. She is accountable for WellCare’s operations in Arkansas, California, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Texas.

Over the years, Munson has demonstrated an ability to build long-term mutually beneficial relationships with customers, organizational partners, and government entities. She has an impressive history in developing and executing winning strategies for increasing revenue and profitability, enhancing productivity, reducing costs, and developing innovative product strategies.

WellCare focuses exclusively on providing government-sponsored managed care services, primarily through Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, and Medicare Prescription Drug Plans, to families, children, seniors, and people with complex medical needs. It contracts with about 374,000 health care providers, helping its members gain access to the right care in the appropriate setting through coordinated care teams and community partnerships.

Munson’s colleagues say she embodies the company’s goal for helping people live healthier lives. Munson works to identify local solutions to fill gaps to help improve health outcomes while simultaneously lowering the cost of health care. She is exceptionally passionate about WellCare’s advocacy programs, which connect community resources and help members navigate the social support network.

Her work focuses on people who really need help and whose challenges in life go beyond health care. Among them are, low-income, elderly, disabled, and individuals with complex medical issues.

After joining WellCare a decade ago, Munson has held positions of increasing responsibility including areas of operations and regulatory compliance for WellCare’s Ohio health plan.  Four years ago, she was named chief operating officer of WellCare of Kentucky and a year later she was promoted to state president of Kentucky. Before assuming her current position, she served as the region president for WellCare’s operations in Arkansas, California, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Tennessee.
